New camera: Sony DSC-H9

Posted by: Julien @ 8:34 am

sony_cybershot_dsc-h9_black.jpegI received this week my new bridge camera: a Sony DSC-H9. It is meant to replace my Konica Minolta Z5, which had some defaults for the use I have.

Along with its 8.1MP CCD and its 15x optical zoom, the H9 has some nice features, such as a big 3″ screen, a NightShot® infrared system, a high sensibility mode (up to 3200 ISO with some expected noise) etc.

Following to my first tests, I particularly like the menus, which are clear and allow very quick fine setup. The AF is very reactive, the built-in flash quite effective. The camera is delivered with an infrared remote control, as well as a lenscap. The only drawback for the moment is the usb cable which is not easy to connect to the camera. I guess I should use an external smart card reader in the future.

I didn’t not want a reflex camera for several reasons: too hard to bring it anywhere with the numerous lenses, which are anyway to expensive for my budget! Bridge cameras are sufficient for my needs and knowledge, and are also easy to use for my girlfriend.

I am fully aware of what could bring a reflex camera to me, and I think I would have bought a Nikon D40x as a reflex camera, with a 18-55 lense kit.

Thanks for the suggestion ;-)

Very nice specs on your new Sony H9. I have a Sony P92 that I bought before my Minolta Z3. I love my Z3 and only wish Minolta hadn’t sold it’s camera business to Sony due to the price/performance differences.

I wonder if you use the video mode on your Sony much? I love being able to shoot video with my camera, and have yet to find another so far in the sub $1000 range that allows the use of the full zoom while recording video, like the Minolta Z3,Z5 do. Both with Cannon’s S3 IS and Sony’s H3, H5 it is possible to use zoom while recording video, but only the optical.

I have even been thinking about getting a 3x tele add on lens (search amazon for Sony H9 accessaries) for my Minolta which would allow a full 36x optical and a smashing 144x total zoom. As I’m sure you are aware the mega zoom camera’s abilities are astounding on their own and I can only wonder at the performance of each one as extras are added on. I wish you much joy with your new found imaging friend. I’m certain your Sony will provide you with many wonderful photographic memories to add to your collection.

To be honest, I haven’t even tried the video mode for the moment. I am not fond of video.

As for the zoom function, I cannot see any point in using a digital zoom for my personal use. I’d rather take a picture with a full optical zoom and resize & resample it later in post-production with The Gimp. This gives better control and avoids blur.

I’ll keep you informed about the video as soon as I have a chance to try it!

I completely understand your preferences as they are shared by may other photograpers as well. I use everything I can - figure out - on the darned thing, which usually means I go to the 2 extremes first to compare results. Example: If I’m shooting long distances, I’ll take a reference shot at 1x than a full optical at 12x on the Z3 than do my best to stablize the camera and take a full zoom shot. I also enjoy the macro and super macro modes. Super macro allows a focal length of 3mm and I even have shots where the lens actually touches the subject. But, with each of my digital cameras since 1997 I have only learned close to half the functionality of the camera beofre moving on to the next one.
Thank you for replying to my comment, I’m always interested in shring experiences and preferences with others.
